Birmingham, Alabama- 1963
The final, and most important, setting in The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, is Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham, unlike Flint, is a very hot city. Flint is freezing cold, and the fact that Alabama is so warm is helpful in showing how out of their element the family really is. Secondly, Birmingham is in the deep south of the United States. Because the book takes place in the midst of Civil Rights, the setting of a southern state really affects all of the events during this time in the story, including the bombing of Joey's church. Finally, Birmingham, Alabama, is the home of Grandma Sands. Grandma Sands is basically the opposite of
Buphead; she is old, strict, southern, and Momma and Daddy entrusted her to fix Byron's behavior. Birmingham is effective to the plot because of Grandma Sands, and very contrasting to the other settings because of its heat and its northern location.
